In 2004, Community Voices Heard implemented a non-partisan electoral program with the goals of raising voter turnout in low-income communities as well as building the capacity of the organization through engaging more community members in our organizing campaigns. Since 2004 individuals we identified and educated have voted at a rate of almost double the average in their districts. As well as raising voter turnout in low-income communities, there are two important components of the project: leadership development and building CVH's organizing campaigns. In the past three years, CVH leaders have been trained in voter outreach strategies and have taken critical roles in electoral outreach in their own communities. Secondly, the electoral projects have successfully engaged community members in organizing after the election. This builds the overall power of our organization and engages more people in our cause.
CVH is working to connect our local organizing to global struggles. We educate ourselves about various connections, build ties among other groups doing this same work, and have relationships with groups overseas. We actively work with a network of similar groups across the country, Grassroots Global Justice, to build the US aspect of the global justice movement and conduct popular education workshops with grassroots leaders.
Training and Capacity Building
Community Voices Heard has a strong commitment to training and capacity building – with our members, with our constituents, with our staff, with interested activists and with other organizations working to build power for low-income people. Over the years, we have developed a series of curriculum based trainings and internship opportunities in an effort to share our experience with others that are interested in developing similar skills. Our trainings include: Organizing 101, Base-Building 101, Mobilization and Turnout: The Numbers Game, Identifying & Developing Leadership, Campaigns 101 & 102, Media & Messaging, Electoral Outreach 101, and more. In addition to running these trainings for members and staff, we are also often asked to conduct trainings for other organizations interested in building organizing arms or developing their existent organizing capacity.
