POUGHKEEPSIE – The state budget has missed its April 1 deadline by three weeks now and Poughkeepsie leaders, tenants and local officials Wednesday called on Governor Hochul to take immediate action on housing by including Good Cause eviction protections and the Housing Access Voucher Program in the state budget.

Community Voices Heard member Tonisha Kelly has been in Poughkeepsie for over 20 years, and “it makes me so angry to have to fight so hard to stay in a place that doesn’t seem like it wants hard-working, taxpaying citizens like myself.”

She said state leaders need to pass Good Cause eviction and stronger tenant protections at the state level, “so that tenants like me don’t have to fight for what is our God-given right; a safe and affordable home.”

Sochie Nnaemeka, the director of the New York Working Families Party, said Good Cause eviction protections “are a crucial step toward making sure every New Yorker has a safe, stable, and affordable place to live.”
